Islamabad — As the humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to escalate, Pakistan has maintained a firm and vocal stance in support of the Palestinian people, strongly condemning Israel’s military actions and alleged war crimes. The country’s foreign policy on the matter reflects a long-standing position rooted in Islamic solidarity, historical alignment with the Palestinian cause, and consistent opposition to Israeli occupation.
A Clear and Consistent Position
Since the outbreak of the Israel-Gaza war following the events of October 7, 2023, Pakistan has called for an immediate ceasefire, unimpeded humanitarian access to Gaza, and the protection of civilians in accordance with international law. The Pakistani government, along with its top diplomatic and military leadership, has described Israel’s bombardment of Gaza as “state terrorism” and “genocide,” especially in light of mass civilian casualties, including thousands of women and children.
Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, former Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari (earlier in tenure) have all issued strong public condemnations of Israel’s actions. The Pakistani parliament has passed multiple resolutions in solidarity with Palestine, calling for global intervention and accountability for war crimes.
No Diplomatic Relations with Israel
Pakistan has never recognized Israel and maintains no diplomatic relations with Tel Aviv. This stance is unlikely to change as long as the Palestinian issue, especially the status of Jerusalem and the right of return for refugees, remains unresolved.
In a 2020 statement, then-Prime Minister Imran Khan reaffirmed that Pakistan would never recognize Israel until a “just and fair solution” for Palestinians is achieved, aligning with the stance laid out by the founder of Pakistan, Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
Public Sentiment and Civil Society
The Palestinian cause enjoys overwhelming public support in Pakistan. Nationwide protests, fundraisers, social media campaigns, and student-led movements have emerged in solidarity with Gaza. Religious leaders, human rights activists, and mainstream political parties have united in condemning what they see as the systematic ethnic cleansing of Palestinians.
Aid and Humanitarian Appeals
While Pakistan has limited logistical access to Gaza, it has pledged humanitarian assistance and called upon international organizations like the United Nations, OIC, and Red Crescent to act swiftly to provide food, shelter, and medical support to the besieged enclave. The Pakistani Red Crescent and NGOs have organized relief efforts, and Pakistan has offered to send aid via Egypt and Qatar.
International Advocacy and UN Forums
Pakistan has actively raised the issue at international forums, including the United Nations General Assembly and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). At the UN, Pakistani representatives have consistently condemned Israeli aggression, urged a two-state solution based on pre-1967 borders, and demanded an end to the illegal blockade of Gaza.
In April 2024, Pakistan welcomed the International Court of Justice’s provisional ruling in favor of South Africa’s genocide case against Israel and called for its enforcement by global powers.
